Gamblin Oil Colors

Founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1980 by the painter and paint maker Robert Gamblin, after a decade of mixing his own colours in five-gallon buckets. The 1980 line carries the founding recipe: pure pigments, refined linseed oil, and marble dust. The colours are mixed, milled, and hand-labelled in Portland, in the same plant that produces Gamblin's Conservation Colors — the formulations museums use to restore works by Van Eyck, Leonardo, and Van Gogh. The paints are solvent-free, contain no lead, mercury, or arsenic-based pigments, and are bound in linseed and safflower oil. The factory runs on wind power, and pigment dust gathered by the studio's air filtration system is recycled annually into a grey called Torrit Grey, given away to working artists on Earth Day.

Hahnemühle Archival Paper

Hahnemühle has made paper since 1584, drawing spring water from artesian wells beneath the Solling hills of Lower Saxony. The mill stands today inside a designated nature reserve, on the same site as at its founding. Photo Rag 308 is among its most enduring sheets — 100% cotton, acid- and lignin-free, calcium carbonate buffered, with a soft matte surface that holds pigment with particular depth. The cotton is drawn from linters left behind by the textile and oil industries; nothing is grown for the paper alone. The mill's electricity has come exclusively from wind, water, and solar for years, and Hahnemühle has produced exclusively vegan papers since 1965 — the first paper mill in the world to make that commitment

Epson Pigment-Based Archival Inks

Where dye-based inks shift and fade, pigment-based inks endure. UltraChrome is Epson's archival ink technology, built on encapsulated pigment particles suspended in water — formulated for the demands of museums, galleries, and serious private collections. Independent testing by Wilhelm Imaging Research, the most widely cited print permanence laboratory in the world, has rated current generations at up to 200 years of display life for colour, and in excess of 400 years for black-and-white under conventional framing. Because the pigments sit on the surface rather than soaking in, they hold colour with greater density and deeper blacks than dye-based alternatives. The inks are water-based, solvent-free, and empty cartridges return to Epson through the company's take-back programme.

Acid-Free 100% Cotton Rag Canvas

Each painting is built on a 100% cotton duck canvas, hand-stretched over a kiln-dried wood stretcher frame and triple-primed with acid-free acrylic gesso. Cotton duck — the heavyweight plain-weave fabric originally developed for sailcloth — has been the working substrate of American painters for more than a century, valued for its even tooth and quiet stability beneath the paint. The triple priming builds a slightly absorbent ground that grips the first layers of oil and gives the painted surface its body. The stretcher bars are kiln-dried before the canvas is mounted, holding the tension of the cotton steady through changes in humidity and time. The canvas itself is acid-free — the same standard applied to archival paper — so the fibres beneath the painting will not yellow or embrittle.
